Report: Spurs 3-0 Everton

Posted on 5 October 2003  - 12:00

English Barclays Premiership

Fredi Kanoute's stunning strike paved the way for a vital win against Everton with three goals in six sensational minutes at the Lane.

The French star crashed home a volley from 30 yards to break the deadlock in what until then had been a closely-fought encounter.

That goal came three minutes before the break and within three minutes of the second half it was 3-0 and game over as Gus Poyet glided home Darren Anderton's cross and Robbie Keane finished from close range.

After a dismal month in the Premiership, not least at home, it was like a team transformed and at 3-0, there were cheers from the crowd for our every touch.

David Pleat brought Rohan Ricketts back into the line-up for Goran Bunjevcevic with Helder Postiga and Bobby Zamora still on the bench.

Ricketts again showed some nice touches but it was Anderton who caught the eye in midfield, setting up two goals, and a defence that has now gone three games without conceding deserve a mention for their handling of the Everton front line.

In all honesty, there was little to write home about in the first half until Kanoute's stunning effort three minutes before the break.

The best effort before that was a piece of Keane magic, nutmegging Joseph Yobo on the edge of the box only to see Nigel Martyn read his effort and save well low to his left. As play continued, Steve Carr crossed the ball straight back in, Paul Konchesky was inches away and Keane volleyed into Park Lane.

Steve Watson and Yobo headed Everton's best chances wide but generally the defence marshalled the threat of Duncan Ferguson and Tomasz Radzinski well.

Kanoute's goal arrived after 42 minutes. Kasey Keller cleared long and Kanoute went for the initial ball, it bounced to Poyet who cushioned a header back for the French star to unleash a 30-yard dipping volley beyond Martyn. It will take something special to deny that the Goal of the Season award.

It could have been 2-0 a minute later as Poyet met Konchesky's deep cross only for Martyn to tip wide at full stretch.

The mood continued into the second half. It took just a minute for the second goal, Poyet stooping low to head home Anderton's cross from the right.

The third goal arrived two minutes later. The ball zipped between Kanoute and Anderton, who released Keane. The Irish striker was held up by David Unsworth but slotted the bouncing ball home at the second attempt. Game over.

Ricketts almost joined in, volleying over and Carr tested Martyn before the game went quiet again, interrupted by substitutions.

One of those was Wayne Rooney, whose presence lifted the visitors without reward although David Weir and Steve Watson might have done better late on.

But it was our day - perhaps the rainbow over the East Stand was a sign...
