Stephane Dalmat inspired a late flourish culminating in a 1-0 win against Newcastle United on Sunday.
The French winger came off the bench with 10 minutes left and took the game to the visitors in a wonderful match-winning cameo.
In four minutes he forced a decent save from Shay Given, cracked a 25-yarder wide and then created the winner, taking the ball off Jonathan Woodgate and hitting a low cross that Andy O'Brien could only slice into his own net with Robbie Keane waiting to tap home.
Newcastle certainly felt they deserved something out of the game but the bare facts are that Kasey Keller only had one save to make in 90 minutes.
The visitors had more than their fair share of possession and on another day Laurent Robert's dangerous crosses might have led to a goal but this wasn't their day.
They will also point to a penalty incident where Mauricio Taricco appeared to trip Aaron Hughes on the box.
But we defended superbly as Gary Doherty shrugged off his personal nightmare against Leicester City and, alongside Anthony Gardner, kept Alan Shearer and Craig Bellamy at bay.
Christian Ziege returned to good effect, Ledley King and Michael Brown met the fierce tackling of Gary Speed and Lee Bowyer head on and an added bonus saw Jamie Redknapp back for the final 20 minutes, his first action since September.
There was also the sight of Robbie Keane, Fredi Kanoute and Jermain Defoe all in the starting line-up with Keane the link man between midfield and attack.
The first was an intriguing, vibrant affair with both sides looking to play and both capable of breaking quickly.
We took the early initiative but Newcastle snapped into the tackle and barely gave, Speed typifying their work rate in midfield, denying us a second on the ball.
Christian Ziege tested Shay Given with a trademark free-kick in the second minute and Ledley King just wide from 25 yards.
There was a lull in the action before Kasey Keller made his first and what turned out to be only save, a fine reaction block with his feet as Olivier Bernard let rip from 30 yards, 25 minutes on the clock.
A minute later and it was hearts in mouths time as Taricco looked to clip Hughes in the box. No penalty awarded.
Our best chance of the half arrived after 34 minutes as Ziege's effort came through a crowd of players and landed at Gary Doherty's feet but he dragged his shot wide from 15 yards.
Doherty did better at the other end though as Keller spilled a tricky ball over the top on landing but as Shearer prepared to slot home, the Irish defender was back to block.
The second half started quietly but kicked into gear after Woodgate's amazing clearance as Keane prepared to nod home Defoe's cross.
Newcastle had the better of it but were efforts on goal simply couldn't get through the barrier put up by Doherty, Gardner, King and Brown.
At the other end, King snatched a shot wide before Redknapp and Dalmat's arrivals, on 69 and 80 minutes, began to turn the tide in our favour.
Dalmat had a couple of efforts straight away before creating the goal. Given did well to smother Keane from close range but as Woodgate dallied, Dalmat nicked the ball of him, hit the byline and crossed low for Keane who would have tapped in had O'Brien not diverted into the top corner first.
