Manchester City did all the damage in the first half with Toda arriving as part of a second half reshuffle that brought greater urgency but no goals.
Toda didn't let himself down, passed the ball well and is a bundle of energy. We might see more of him between now and the end of the season.
City really grasped the nettle in that first half. It took only 10 seconds for their first attempt on goal, a further two minutes to open the scoring and went in with a deserved 2-0 lead.
At the other end, all we had to show were a couple of Sheringham efforts and Keane's wild volley over.
Anelka had the chance for the quickest goal here all season when he latched onto King's poor clearing header from kick-off. He had to to pick his spot but chose the advertising boards.
It wasn't long before City opened the scoring though and the simplicity would no doubt have disappointed the management. Benarbia clipped the corner in and Sommeil nodded home, unmarked, from six yards.
We got ourselves into a couple of decent positions after that with Sheringham's volley plucked out of the air by Schmeichel and the skipper's header looping over.
Keller saved magnificently from Wright-Phillips but the visitors soon doubled their lead.
Keller was unlucky this time. Having saved Anekla's scuffed effort one-on-one the ball finally fell to Barton on the edge of the box - his shot deflecting off the American into the corner.
Glenn Hoddle responded with two changes at half-time including handing Japanese international Toda his Premiership debut. He came on for Bunjevcevic while Perry replaced Taricco as we switched from 4-4-2 to 3-5-2.
We certainly stepped up a gear but needed that goal - thanks to Schmeichel it didn't come.
The Great Dane, playing at the Lane for the last time having anncounced his retirement, produced two fine saves at telling times.
The first came just three minutes in when Poyet's quick-shoe shuffle resulted in a left-foot drive that Schmeichel clung onto on his line.
The second followed later and was our last chance as the big man's body managed to block out Keane's close-range volley.
In-between, Keller did well to save low to his right from Fowler's clever reverse shot and Sheringham volleyed into the ground after Poyet flicked on Carr's cross.
Sommeil should have doubled his personal tally with 15 minutes left and that was about that.
