A game that meant so much always threatened to catch fire but unfortunately the torch was lit at the wrong end in the last minute.
It could have been all so different as Gus Poyet had the ball in the net in the 52nd nminute only for the celebrations to be cut short by the linesman's flag. Initial replays proved inconclusive - it was a tight call.
We had our fair share of chances - Shay Given produced the save of the night to deny Poyet's spectacular volley - but Newcastle could also point to some near misses, not least from eventual matchwinner Jenas just five minutes from time when the former Charlton midfielder failed to hit the target from 10 yards.
The first half had plenty of quality but little in terms of clear-cut chances.
The returning Anthony Gardner looped a tricky header over after two minutes and Poyet was unlucky to see his shot deflected wide after Simon Davies' delicious low cross from the right.
Teddy Sheringham chested into Davies' path after 15 minutes only for Olivier Bernard to hack away his effort with Robbie Keane lurking.
Newcastle, so quick coming forward, found Dean Richards a hurdle too far when both Jenas and, more dangerously, Craig Bellamy burst into the box.
The first save arrived after 34 minutes as Kasey Keller dived low to his left to divert Bernard's blast from 25 yards.
Unfortunately, there was bad news to end the half as Keane, who took a whack in the ankle area early on, limped off to be replaced by Gary Doherty.
The second half crackled into life and was only two minutes old when Given rescued himself and denied Poyet one of the goals of the season.
The Irish keeper was out of his box to tidy up a long pass forward but only succeeded in hitting his own player, Poyet was onto the ball in a flash and volleyed the ball back from 35 yards - Given somehow got back to flick the ball wide.
Four minutes later and Poyet thought he'd broken the deadlock, drilling home from Anderton's pass, but it was ruled out for offside.
If a warning was needed, just as those celebrations calmed, Bellamy broke into the box at the other end and it took a fine reaction block from Keller to keep him out.
A couple of half-chances came and went as passes went astray and we had to wait until the 73rd minute for the next effort as Poyet volleyed wide.
Jenas should have wrapped it up with five minutes left as a Newcastle break left Shearer clear. Keller saved his initial effort, Richards then blocked the follow up and Jenas shot wide with the goal at his mercy.
But he made amends as the clock ticked into the 90th minute. Titus Bramble led another raid down the right, Bellamy took over into the box and Keller was there again but the ball landed at Jenas' feet and, despite scuffing it slightly, he couldn't miss this time.
