After an even first half, Berger spectacularly opened the scoring after 52 minutes to pave the way for Pompey's victory.
Referee Steve Dunn blew for a more than debatable free-kick against Anthony Gardner on Ayegbeni Yakubu but with the ball placed a fully 35 yards from goal, a shot on goal looked unlikely.
But Berger wasn't having any of it, took a long run up and simple smashed a drive low to Kasey Keller's right.
The second arrived 15 minutes later, again for a foul by Gardner on Yakubu and this time Berger's shot from 20 yards appeared to go through the wall, taking the slightest deflection on the way, leaving Keller helpless.
We were disappointing in that second half and failed to test Wapenaar again.
The home side had the slight edge in the first half although we got ourselves into it more and more as the half wore on.
Yakubu should have opened the scoring in the fourth minute, somehow scooping over from Sheringham's mishit effort and Sherwood saw his header cleared off the line by Keane.
Jackson, impressive in the first half, stung Wapenaar's hands from distance before Kanoute perhaps chose the wrong option in shooting wide from a tight angle rather than cutting back to Keane.
Kanoute could do little else but divert Carr's low, driven cross over the bar and then the move of the half, Poyet, King and Dalmat eventually sending Keane through on goal but Wapenaar was out quickly to block with his legs.
Keller flicked Smertin's thunderbolt over and Sherwood headed wide when he might have done better from Berger's corner.
Berger gave an indication of what was to follow when he curled just wide from the edge of the box two minutes into the second half.
Five minutes later he made his mark. Gardner barely seemed to touch Yakubu but the free-kick was still fully 35 yards out when Berger took his run up - his shot flew in.
He then repeated the trick from 20 yards as his curler appeared to go through the wall and take a slight deflection to leave Keller helpless.
Postiga and Ricketts entered te fray as we searched for a way back but headers from Postiga and Kanoute were off the mark.
Yakubu should have made it 3-0 after 80 minutes, Keller denying him one-on-one and that was just about that, despite six minutes of injury time. It was one to forget
