Report: Leeds 0-1 Spurs

Posted on 11 January 2004  - 12:00

English Barclays Premiership

Robbie Keane struck again against a former club to secure this vital Premiership win at Elland Road.

The Irish star buried the best chance of the game after 55 minutes as we put successive wins on the board in the league to move up to 13th in the table.

He has now scored in all three games against Leeds since his switch to the Lane in August 2002.

A hat-trick against Wolves last month and a goal against Coventry City in the Carling Cup make it five goals in three games against his former clubs so far this season.

This strike, a clinical finish after a quick free-kick from Mauricio Taricco, could be one of the most important of the campaign.

Defeat at Elland Road against a Leeds side struggling in the bottom three would have been a huge blow, undone a lot of the good work from Wednesday's 4-1 win against Birmingham and left us hovering above the relegation zone again.

Instead, we're up to 13th and a win away from the top 10. What a difference a week or even a change of year makes - we have a 100 per cent record in 2004!

The importance of the game wasn't lost on either side and led to a cagey first half, fairly even possession and few chances.

However, we always looked the more fluent going forward and more likely to score with Keane, Fredi Kanoute and Stephane Dalmat a constant threat and Simon Davies always willing to join in.

Having said that it was defender Gary Doherty, in such fine form at the back, who came closest to scoring in the first half.

Darren Anderton swung in a corner in the eighth, Doherty headed towards the top corner only for Paul Robinson to save at full stretch.

Dalmat looked dangerous again but didn't see enough of the ball in that first half while Jermaine Pennant carried the threat for Leeds and saw plenty of it - his end product disappointing for the home side.

The home side's best chance came from the other flank though as Olembe reached the byline and crossed only for Anthony Gardner to nick in ahead of Nicky Barmby, who would have been left with a tap in.

We were without doubt the better side in the second half and once we scored, Leeds had no answer.

Keane had already tested Robinson and Anderton shot inches wide before the breakthrough 10 minutes into the half.

It all stemmed from the quick thinking of Taricco who, spotting Keane's run, took a free-kick early on the halfway line and flighted the perfect 35-yard pass into his path. Keane controlled, held off Duberry and there was no doubting his finish, low past Robinson from 12 yards.

Eddie Gray through on James Milner and Lamine Sakho in an attempt to grab a goal back but Leeds' best and only real chance fell to half-time substitute Michael Bridges - on for Mark Viduka - but he failed to connect with Pennant's corner.

That chance came in the 69th minute and it was all Spurs after that. Robinson saved well from Kanoute and Taricco, Kanoute shot just wide and Poyet, on for Anderton, was a yard off target from 25 yards.

A couple of late corners had the heart racing but there was little doubt the points went to the right home.
