Report: Chelsea 4-2 Spurs

Posted on 14 September 2003  - 12:00

English Barclays Premiership

Fredi Kanoute's double strike counted for little as our woes at Stamford Bridge continued in the Premiership on Saturday.

The French striker gave us hope by opening the score after 24 minutes and a ray of light by pulling it back to 3-2 with five minutes left but Chelsea, in charge for the middle period, had the final word when old adversary Jimmy Hasselbaink tapped in the fourth.

Apart from Cudicini's save to deny Redknapp's early potshot, it was a fairly quiet start until the contest erupted in the 24th minute.

The action started with our goal. Anderton, in space on the right, floated the ball into Kanoute, his chest down lost Melchiot and Terry in one movement and as Cudicini rushed out, the French striker toe-poked home.

Zamora's header went wide and at the other end, the dangerous Hasselbaink was kept out by magnificent blocks from Anderton and Gardner.

Unfortunately, Chelsea were level after 34 minutes. Duff squeezed out enough space on the right touchline to cross deep where Lampard's header squeezed past Keller.

Two minutes later and the home side were in front. Duff was again the provider, this time roaming centrally with the ball before slipping the perfect pass to Mutu who, aided slightly by King's stumble, was able to pick his spot one-on-one.

King then limped out of it replaced by Bunjevcevic and Richards saw his header chalked off for a foul.

Keller somehow saw enough of Lampard's drive through the bodies to tip it aside and in injury time, Ricketts' attempted lob from distance after Cudicini's poor clearance landed on the roof of the net.

The second half was somewhat disappointing as Chelsea carved out the better chances and five substitutions killed the flow of the game.

There were debuts for Konchesky (for Taricco) and Dalmat (for Anderton) and the French midfielder showed some nice creative touches to little avail.

At the other end, Duff shot wide and Keller saved from Mutu before the Romanian hitman produced a carbon copy finish to his earlier goal, latching on to Cole's pass before sliding home, 74 minutes on the clock.

Mutu then wasted his best chance, an open goal, before hope at the end when Richards hit the inside of the post and Kanoute buried the rebound.

But the Blues had the final word when Babayaro crossed low for Hasselbaink to tap in.
