Remembering Peter Baker

Posted on 27 January 2016  - 02:00

Tributes came pouring in following the sad passing of our legendary double-winning full-back Peter Baker on Wednesday.

Born in Hampstead, Peter was a defensive colossus of Bill Nicholson’s all-conquering team of the ‘glory, glory’ years of the early 1960s.

When gathering the memories of some of his former team-mates this week, one thing about Peter that consistently stood out was his sporting prowess away from football.

Cliff Jones - pictured with Peter (left) and John White after the 1962 FA Cup Final - explained: “Peter was so consistent, fit and he was an unbelievable all-round sportsman. He played cricket for Middlesex seconds, he played squash at county level for Middlesex, tennis, golf off single-figures and you just didn’t play him at snooker! You’d lose all your money!”
