Redknapp on Rio

Posted on 24 September 2004  - 12:00

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Jamie Redknapp reckons Rio Ferdinand has it all as a defender - but expects Jermain Defoe to give him a tough time at White Hart Lane on Saturday.

Manchester United's visit throws up the intriguing clash between in-form striker Jermain and Rio, back in United's defence after his ban, former West Ham and surely future England team-mates.

"Jermain's at the top of his game and he'll give anyone a tough time at the moment," said the skipper ahead of the mouth-watering encounter.

"He's small, so quick and hard to play against if you are a big guy.

"He gets his shots away so quickly as well, just give him half a yard and 'bang', the shot's off. It will be more of a test for Rio than he got on Monday, that's for sure."

Rio returned from his ban in United's 2-1 win against Liverpool on Monday.

"I've known Rio for years," said Jamie. "I remember my dad (Harry) when Rio was 15 or 16 saying to me 'we've got this kid coming through, he's gangly, a bit awkward but he can play and he'll go all the way'. My dad is a judge of a player - he said it about Frank, Joe Cole, Jermain and they've all gone on to achieve the things he said they would.

"Rio is the player everyone thought he would be. He's such a natural talent, he's got everything. There's not really a weakness in his game. But I'm sure on Saturday with Jermain, Fredi and Robbie he'll have his hands full."

Jamie can't wait to line-up against United, old foes from his Liverpool days.

"Any time you play United it's a great game because they have so many world-class players in their side," he added.

"Liverpool against United is always a massive game, the biggest for both teams and I thought United completely controlled it on Monday. They were excellent.

"They've got Rio back, Van Nistelrooy's fit - just putting those two back in the team makes a difference. Ronaldo is also back after missing the first couple of games. They are strong, we know that, we've got to make sure we keep our own form going.

"We have to be confident. We're unbeaten and although we know it will be a difficult game, we're looking forward to it."
