Trailing 1-0 at half-time despite dominating the first half, Gareth Bale and Gylfi Sigurdsson struck in the 59th and 64th minutes respectively to make the scoreline more reflective of the action in the third and final friendly of our US tour.
We found ourselves trailing at the break after Kenny Cooper's early penalty.
That decision came in the seventh minute. Michael Dawson was pulled out wide, Tim Cahill spotted the space and Dax McCarty found the pass. Cahill drove into the box and was barged over by Jan Vertonghen and there were few complaints. Cooper sent Gomes the wrong way from the spot.
Gareth Bale almost got us back on terms within four minutes, striking a dipping free-kick from 25 yards that Red Bulls goalkeeper Bill Gaudette had to watch all the way before touching over.
Bale then turned provider for Tom Huddlestone, who measured his shot from 20 yards and Gaudette turned away diving to his right. Bale met David Bentley's inswinging corner, but couldn't angle his header on target from the near post.
Gomes was a spectator at the other end but Red Bulls remained organised as a unit and there was only one more shot of note as Kyle Walker sliced a yard wide.
Harry Kane, William Gallas and Jermaine Jenas entered the fray at half-time and we were soon back in the ascendency in the second half.
Once again, Gaudette produced the goods when called upon and this was his best save, outstanding reactions to tip over Lennon's close-range effort.
Gaudette could do little to prevent Bale from equalising five minutes later. Sigurdsson floated in a corner from the right and Bale rose majestically above McCarty to power his header into the top corner - a second headed goal on this tour.
It was soon 2-1 with a fine strike from Sigurdsson. Picking the ball up on the left side, he turned inside Holgersson onto his right foot and curled into the top corner from 16 yards.
Michael Dawson was inches away from a third goal when he rattled the crossbar from Sigurdsson's corner and the game's final chance fell to Kane, who directed Andros Townsend's cross on goal, but couldn't beat Gaudette.
