"We didn't deserve to win the game," said the goalkeeper afterward, who made two big saves in the encounter at the Stadium of Light. "We didn't play well, we should have nicked a point, but credit to Sunderland for nicking a goal that they probably deserved.

"It wasn't a good game and I only had to make a couple of saves. We're devastated, we wanted to get off to a good start and we've done exactly what we didn't want to do," he added, before turning his mind to the visit of Everton to the Lane on Tuesday night.

"The only good thing is that the next game is on Tuesday, we are at home again and we've got to get our season on track."
