Ramon: 'I thanked God'

Posted on 6 November 2000 - 12:00

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Ramon Vega felt the weight of the footballing world lift off his shoulders at 3.37pm on Saturday — thanks to Kevin Phillips.
The Swiss defender was penalised for handball for the second week in succession and after a week in which his manager, team-mates and Vega in particular had come under criticism from fans, all he needed was for deadly Phillips to open the scoring at his expense.
But Lady Luck finally shone on Vega as hotshot Phillips (pictured afterwards) blasted over the bar. Vega went mad in celebration and had plenty to celebrate later on as Chris Armstrong’s goal secured three points.
Vega reflected on that handball and penalty miss by admitting: “God helped me today!”
“Handball happened again, unbelievable!” he added. “Perhaps I will have to go with Hans Segers for goalkeeper’s training!
“I was upset at the time and I was wondering ‘what is going on, am I just unlucky?’ but God helped me and Phillips put it over the target. I have to thank God about that because finally the luck came back to me.
“If you work hard then the luck has to come back. I couldn’t believe it happened to me again. Phillips missed the target, that was lucky and we went on to win the game.”
Vega played his part in a battle royale with Niall Quinn. Honours were just about even after 90 minutes but Vega can claim a points win after the giant Irishman failed to score or set up his strike partner Phillips.
“Quinn is a massive fellow, a Swiss mountain I think!” said Vega. “I thought I handled it quite well.
“He is always the target for the long balls and he is always there and it was my job to try and destroy that. George Graham told me to cover him and I thought I did quite well.
”It was just important that we won especially after the midweek defeat against Birmingham City. We showed character, personality, got the three points and now we are up there again.
“I think the supporters were fair as well. They were fantastic, behind the team and that encouraged us.”
To listen to Ramon's thoughts, click here
By Paul Miles

<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
