Rafa on target as Dutch crash out

Rafa van der Vaart scored a fine goal against Portugal - but it wasn't enough to prevent Holland's exit from Euro 2012 on Sunday night.

Rafa took just 11 minutes to make his mark in his first start of the tournament.

Picking up the ball 25 yards out, Rafa shifted onto his left foot and curled a beauty into the top corner.

That had the Dutch dreaming of a great escape from Group B but it wasn't to be as Cristiano Ronaldo hit back to twice and hand Portugal a 2-1 victory.

Germany's 2-1 win against Denmark means Germany and Portugal progress to the quarter-finals wiith Holland bottom of the group without a point from their three matches.

Attention turns to Group C today with Luka Modric and Vedran Corluka preparing for a cracker against reigning world and European champions Spain.

The two teams are level on four points going into the match in Gdansk with Spain top on goal difference.

The permutations for qualifying from Group C could become a little complicated but the basics are that if Croatia beat Spain, they go through and if Italy fail to beat the Republic of Ireland, Croatia will also go through.

If Croatia and Italy end up on the same points tally and are level on points, goal difference, head-to-head (they drew 1-1) and goals scored, the team to progress will be decided by UEFA's coefficient ranking - and Italy are ahead at the moment.
