Qu Bo on trial

Posted on 29 July 2002  - 12:00

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Chinese World Cup striker Qu Bo has linked with the club for a trial period and could feature in our forthcoming Testimonial games against Crystal Palace and Watford.

The 21-year-old arrived at Spurs Lodge on Monday to begin training and allow Glenn to take a look at the striker.

Director of football David Pleat saw the pacy frontman first hand during the World Cup and arranged for him to have a spell at the club.

"He's here for a few days for us to have a look at him," reported David. "It's not easy, there is a lot of red tape.

"He's been living in a country many miles away with a different type of football machinery to ourselves but, the bottom line is, he played for China in the World Cup and showed something to me which was a little bit different.

"He's got pace, I saw him do a couple of clever things against Brazil in a game where they didn't show enough confidence and might have done better - but it wasn't an easy game for them.

"After that they found it difficult and, indeed, failed to score. So you could say spotting a goalscorer in a team that fails to score is being a bit clever!

"In truth, he seems a nice lad and is over here for the first time. He's here for about ten days and we hope he'll play in both testimonial games - one at Watford for Nigel Gibbs and Simon Rodger's game at Crystal Palace.

"It will give Glenn a chance to have a look at him and assess him, and if Glenn thinks he's of first team material we'll take it further. He's got to be tested because it's not good enough to be just another player, he's got to be of first team standard. If he's not, it will have been an experience for him and an interesting exercise for us."

As well as witnessing Qu Bo's World Cup displays, David called on his network of contacts to discover more information on the player's club pedigree.

"I've spoken to people in China obviously. When he impressed me in the World Cup I immediately went to speak to various Chinese people and asked them about the boy's past history and what they thought his strengths were."

Everton have been busy in the Chinese transfer market, drafting in two players as part of a sponsorship deal. David feels that Qu Bo is a player that might catch Glenn's eye.

"I think, for his age and the abilities he's got, and the abilities we haven't got in terms of pace and striking power that this is the one for Glenn to have a look at."
