Programme: Glenn Hoddle

Posted on 13 September 2001 - 12:00

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

A warm welcome to Roy McFarland and to everyone from Torquay.
It’s good to see Roy back in football and we wish him all the best in his new challenge at Plainmoor.
This is cup football and that means a lot of things. Firstly it represents a route into Europe but it also means that we'll get just one chance tonight — and we've got to take it. We can't and won't be complacent because anything less than 100 per cent throughout would be disastrous
We enjoyed our first win of the season here against Southampton on Sunday and now have to again show that same attitude and build on that victory.
If you are going to win a trophy these are the games that you've got to win. We know that Torquay are a professional outfit and we will be giving them the greatest respect. We should beat them and everybody outside the club will be expecting that but football is a strange game and unless you get both the motivation and your game plan right you could get turned over. History has proved that.
So we've got to be positive. True we've got injury problems and some of the players that played on Sunday had to do so while 75 per cent fit so the big decision for me this week is whether to rest those players and give them the luxury of the time to get ready for Chelsea while also keeping one eye on the fact that we do not want to weaken the team tonight and pay the consequences.
We need to get that balancing act right because we took a risk against Saints and now we've got to decide if we play safe this week and get them ready for Sunday. At the time of this programme going to print I am still pondering on that crucial point.
But, as I say, this is a European route via a trophy that this club has won three times in our history. It's a trophy that we are chasing and want success in because it represents a great chance for us to win something this season.
However, the Torquay players will be well up for this tonight. This is their Worthington Cup final. They've got nothing to lose, they'll come here with a lot of hope and a lot of determination. Like all of these games, our priority is just got to get the win and get through. To do so we've got to get one or two early goals — if that happens it becomes easier. But my experience as a player in these situations tells me that if it's still goalless at half-time then it could become a very difficult game for us.
Clearly we don't want that. So we've got to show the right attitude and make sure we're in the third round.
A look at the history books tells you that at these early stages of both the FA and the Worthington Cups there is always one big club that falls. A giant is felled. We've got to make sure that it's not us.
We also know that victory can only be achieved with the right application. Complacency is a human reaction but there's no room for it tonight. We've got to be professional, the staff have to ensure that they all do their jobs well this week and that we go into this game totally prepared.
In closing, I was very impressed by your support here against Southampton, particularly in the second half when you lifted the players to victory. I will speak more about that in the Chelsea programme but never underestimate the difference that you can make to any success we achieve.
Get behind the team again tonight and let's do this job together.
<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
