Martin Jol has identified Yakubu as the principal threat ahead of the visit of Portsmouth to Lane on Saturday.
The Nigerian international has scored freely since being recruited by former Fratton Park boss Harry Redknapp and he netted last time out against Middlesbrough.
After a strong spell following the appointment of Velimir Zajec as manager, Pompey endured a sticky patch of four straight Premiership defeats before getting back on track against Boro. Martin feels this is fairly typical of the Premiership.
"They started off well then had a couple of weeks where they didn't have a good spell, but that happens to most teams in the Premiership," reflected the Head Coach.
"They have some very good players and look strong at the back. They employ a crowded midfield and have Berger, who is a top player. Yakubu is their best player and is looking a threat all the time. We have to cope with that, eliminate that and, with Andy Reid in and maybe one or two players back, I think we have to and should win.
"Bolton were a rival team and we should have stayed eighth in the league, now we are ninth. It will be the same against Portsmouth, if we win we can go places, if we don't we have a problem."
