Clive Allen doesn't hesitate in naming Alan Shearer as the best striker in Premier League history.
No stranger to goals himself, Clive, who memorably scored 49 in a season for Spurs in 1986-87, cannot speak highly enough of the striker currently way out in front in the all-time Premier League goalscoring chart having just reached the 250 mark. The next best is Andy Cole on 174.
Our development coach Clive remembers seeing the legendary Newcastle and former England hitman as a raw 18-year-old
"As it stands, he's the best goalscorer the Premiership has seen," said Clive. "Obviously the likes of Henry spring to mind when you look at the bigger picture but at this point, Shearer's the best in the Premiership.
"In terms of all-time, he's also up there alongside the best.
"His record speaks for itself, his longevity speaks for itself - I remember playing against him in one of his early games for Southampton when I was at Chelsea.
"As an 18-year-old you could see he was a prospect and he's fulfilled that in a long career, which is all credit to him.
"The way he plays the game has changed over the years mainly through injury but what he's always done is been a magnificent threat in terms of scoring goals. Give him an inch and he will take advantage.
"He may not have the pace he once had but he's certainly got the nous and it will be a massive test for us."
