David Pleat believes Aston Villa have benefited from fielding a regular side and the experience within it.
The likes of Thomas Hizlsperger, Juan Pablo Angel and J-Lloyd Samuel have all blossomed in the second half of the season alongside the youthful but experienced Lee Hendrie, Gareth Barry and Daruis Vassell and the older heads of Olof Mellberg and Ronny Johnsen.
David said: "They've had a regular team, a regular shape and Angel has scored vital goals for them at important times.
"Crouch also did it at Middlesbrough on Saturday, Schwarzer made the save but he was there. He's picked up again after a bad run.
"Solano may have been a good signing, certainly in the short-term and they've experienced players at centre-back, Johnsen and Mellberg, and an experienced goalkeeper in Sorensen."
Only Arsenal and Chelsea better Villa's record in the Premiership since the turn of the year.
David O'Leary's men were in the relegation zone when we best them at the Lane in November but that superb form has seen them challenge Liverpool and Newcastle for the last Champions League spot.
David added: "Any team that had a run was going to be up there. Charlton have faltered a little, Fulham have stayed around, Newcastle and Liverpool are finishing strong.
"You need a run at this time of year. You get a base and then sprint off from that base. That's where we've faltered from mid-February."
