Praise for 'Tano'

Posted on 17 October 2001  - 12:00

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Glenn Hoddle and Gus Poyet heaped praise on Mauricio Taricco after his display against Derby County.

The Argentinian wing-back has bounced back from his nightmare year on the sidelines through injury and is visibly growing in confidence and strength by the game.

Monday's win against the Rams was arguably his best yet as 'Tano' constantly looked to push Seth Johnson - transferred to Leeds United for £7m yesterday - on the back foot.

His promptings certainly caught the eye of Glenn who pointed out: "He's a great left or right-back in a four and we've convinced him he can play in a wing-back role as well.

"I thought he was excellent. To be honest Tano came onto a very good game probably when we went off the boil a bit and that's a credit to the player.

"It's easy when everything is in-sync and everyone's playing well but when there was a bit of anxiety creeping in he got us going again.

"His use of the ball, crossing, he got behind them a few times, nearly scored himself, it was a credit to him."

Close friend Gus agreed: "Tano was magnificent. Because of his position, quite high up the pitch, he can go forward and there are always possibilities.

"He got in some good positions and everyone was saying 'come on, have a shot' but I think it's good for the team that everyone wants to play and everyone is involved.

"He knew that he needed to play games. He is now doing that and getting better and better."

Glenn added: "Tano is playing very well, he's somebody that when I came to the club I didn't know much about and he's been a pleasant surprise.

"He had a 12 months of hard time with injuries so it's good to see him progress.

"We've got Tim coming back and Goran playing reserves so we've a bit of beef coming back into the squad - and we need that if we're going to achieve anything this year."
