Praise for Clemence

Posted on 19 March 2001 - 12:00

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

David Pleat was full of praise for his inherited charges as he reflected on his first game in charge following the departure of George Graham on Friday.
One player who particularly caught wily old David's eye was waspish-but-cultured midfielder Stephen Clemence, playing his second game in a row in a central position after covering more holes than Polyfilla during previous incarnations with the first team.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
While trying not to single any particular individual out after a convincing win that displayed the undoubted character of the team, David could not resist a special mention for 'Clem'.
"They all did well," said David. "But Clemence did very well, Clemence could almost have been magnificent today, almost.
"He made some very good passes. He was almost very, very good. He did well."
David went on to offer his verdict on why Clem has made a greater impact on the two games he's played in.
"He loves playing in-field, he doesn't like playing on the wide sides where you have to have other qualities. He likes playing centrally, he likes manoeuvring the ball. He's a good footballer."
On other significant contributions, David added: "Youngie, fantastic energy, beginning to do well. We're waiting for Carr to come back now," before throwing in a tasty one for the pub jury to debate long into the night.
"Doherty, settled into that position - but you know what I think of Gary. I think he could be a front player. We'll see."
