The Liberal Democrat MP for Burnley spoke to a number of young people who are currently taking apprenticeships with the Foundation and its partners across a range of sectors.
In partnership with the National Apprenticeship Service and the Haringey Regeneration Department, the Foundation and the Club have invested in local apprenticeships across Retail, Hospitality, IT and Community Sports sectors.
Tottenham Hotspur Foundation currently runs seven Sports apprenticeships, two IT apprenticeships, 30 hospitality apprenticeships with catering partner Lindley Group and a Global Coaching apprenticeship, with further apprenticeships in retail starting in January 2014.
After meeting with apprentices, including those who have since gone into full employment, Gordon Birtwistle MP said: “Tottenham Hotspur is offering young people real career opportunities through their well-structured apprenticeship program.
“On visiting White Hart Lane it was clear to see why the Club is succeeding and their strategy to grow their own talent works well for them as an employer and the apprentices. The work they are doing in the community as well as on site is commendable as the apprentices are highly skilled in a variety of areas; catering, IT, sports leadership and sport.
“Apprenticeships are the way forward. They provide on-the-job training and offer a wage with a career at the end of it. I started my working life as an apprentice and I have never looked back since. I am delighted to see the inspiring work Spurs are doing to help give young people a chance and enter the world of work. I hope that other football clubs are following suit as apprenticeships are not only beneficial for the young person but also for the companies that employ them.”
Grant Cornwell, Chief Executive, Tottenham Hotspur Foundation, added: “Here at Tottenham Hotspur we are big advocates of apprenticeships and the benefits that they can bring to young people in helping them prepare for the work place. We have seen first-hand the incredible motivation that our apprentices have, along with their desire and commitment to contribute to our organisation. We firmly believe that apprentices will help play a huge part in the growth of our organisation in the coming years.”
