Poyet's Profiles: Part 2

Posted on 3 July 2002  - 12:00

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Who was Gus Poyet's 'revelation' of last season? Find out as the majestic midfielder gives us his exclusive, personal, end-of-season profiles.

This is the second of a three-part series and it's the turn of Gus's midfield colleagues...

4: Steffen Freund: At the start of the season it looked like he wouldn't be in the starting line-up. That was a possiblility. But when he got injured he was doing magnificently for us, especially for the balance of the team. We go forward a lot and you need a player to keep the balance.

7: Darren Anderton: The staff have done great to keep him fit and he played some great stuff. He changed his position because when I came to the club I'd always seen Darren playing wide and I was in midfield with him with the freedom to go forward right and left. I still say I would have had him in the national team. I would have taken him to the World Cup, of course, but it is not my decision.

8: Tim Sherwood: Tim was unlucky with injuries at first. I can remember when we were in La Manga last summer he already had a problem and he was coming back and picking up another injury. But when Steffen Freund was injured he came in and did a great job for us, passing the ball around, playing and everyone will remember the game he played against Chelsea.

17: Oyvind Leonhardsen: Leo hasn't played but he's such an honest player. Even thinking that he wasn't playing or even on the bench he has been a professional and always doing his best.

25: Stephen Clemence: Another player who was unlucky but that was a bad tackle, a tackle that can keep you out for a long time. He tried to come back, was a little longer than expected but when he came back against Liverpool he was outstanding.

28: Matthew Etherington: Something different. We don't have another player like him. It is a great bonus for the manager and for the players to have someone like that who can go past players, cross and is so direct. Not too many players can do it. A great player for the team.

29: Simon Davies: A revelation. I saw him last season and he was doing alright but you are always waiting to see a complete season. Everywhere he's played he's done great for the team. He is one of the few players, Matty as well, who can go past players running and dribbling. The rest of us have to pass the ball. He's another great option and really important for us.
