Impressive shows against Chelsea, Sunderland, Liverpool and the first half against Manchester United yielded only a three-point haul, and John wants us to start making our points, in the league table sense, in front of the cameras at the Lane on Monday night.
"Everybody in the Premier League is a big challenge, but we need three points, that's the challenge," said John. "We need to get the maximum points because we feel we've played well.
"The Manchester United game, we need to get over that one, and the sooner we can put the record straight the better and get the three points. To put in another good performance would be a nice bonus."
John does not feel that we should unduly suffer by being the first Premiership opponents of new Pride Park manager Colin Todd. A new man at the helm can often mean a tricky encounter for the team they come up against due to players seeking to impress the new boss.
"Colin has been at the club and is just stepping up - so it's not like a brand new manager coming in. They did lose in midweek and we watched the game in the Worthington Cup, but I do think it will be a hard game and they will come here determined to probably get a point and make life dificult for us.
"If we play like we did against Man Utd in the first half, and like we've been playing, we obviously will go out for full points.
"This has been the sort of game in the past that we might have slipped up on, but we don't want to slip up on these type of games. Like the game against Southampton, it took us a while to wear them down and we ended up getting the points. That is the aim on Monday night and the only thing that matters is the points.
"We need to get two or three wins on the trot and then we can be right up there, doing well in the cup, and then it can be a good season for us."
We are 9/1 to win 3-0 with 22/1 on a 4-0 triumph - click for details.
After receiving many plaudits for the style of recent performances, John Gorman says the only thing that matters against Derby is the securing of three points.
