Alton was one of a couple of members of the side with first team experience in the behind-closed-doors friendly against Arsenal at London Colney. It was a chastening experience for our young team as they chase both fitness and form ahead of the new campaign.
Our young defenders is anxious that the remainder of the preparation includes good results as well as improved fitness — starting at Woking.
"At this stage in the season you are not really match fit," reasoned Alton looking back at the London Colney defeat to a youthful Arsenal side. "Even they weren’t match fit, but it was one of those games where we were not really at the races.
"I know their youth team had a good season last time and won the youth cup, so we knew it would be a hard game, but the result definitely disappointed us — especially against Arsenal, everyone was really disappointed afterwards.
"It just didn’t go well for us."
Alton views the pre-season tussle against the Surrey side as vital in building up the confidence of the second-string.
"Definitely, you always want your next game to come quickly so you can erase the memories of a bad performance and get on with the next match. We’re looking forward to the game and aiming for a much better result.
"It’s always going to be physical playing sides from that level. We’ve got a lot of young lads in the team from last year’s youth teams. It’s going to be hard for them, but a good experience for them playing against physically stronger players. It will be a tough game.
"You don’t want to play in any defeats — no matter what level you’re playing at. At this stage it is about fitness, but you want results as well to put you in good stead for the season."
It is during the course of the new season that Alton is hoping to force his way back into the first team picture, but he is adopting the right attitude regarding his current omission.
"You are always going to be disappointed not to be involved in the first team. I’ve got to keep my head up and keep trying to play well and impress the manager."
Alton Thelwell says the reserve group are determined to impress in Tuesday evening’s visit to Conference side Woking to erase memories of a heavy defeat to Arsenal last time out.
