Pleat's call to fans

Posted on 17 December 2003  - 12:00

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

David Pleat says the White Hart Lane crowd can provide the team with the metaphorical 12th man against Middlesbrough in the Carling Cup quarter-final tonight.

The Teesiders have kept nine clean sheets in their last ten games and David is hoping that the fans can help the team maintain a quick tempo to their game as they attempt to break down the Middlesbrough resistance.

"I hope the crowd will get behind us right from the word go and help us with our tempo," said the acting manager. "Is it for the crowd to get behind us or is it for us to get the crowd going?

"We have to inspire the fans and the start is important in any game. We need to start well and the fans, I'm sure, will realise that the 'extra man' that the atmosphere can generate will be important to us. It is a home game and that is crucial to us."

Meanwhile, David added that the prospect of a long evening featuring extra-time and penalties has not yet entered his thinking.

"We just need to make sure that we are in front after 90 minutes and we haven't spoken about beyond that."
