David Pleat has denied weekend reports that we have made a bid for the Aston Villa defender Ugo Ehiogu. We have been linked with the centre-back throughout the summer and both Sport First and the Sunday Mirror claimed that we have had bids turned down. The Mirror suggested that we had offered L4m.
Our director of football responded: "This is not true. We have made no bid and had no discussions with Aston Villa about the player."
Pleat was also quick to quash speculation that we were ready to swoop for Wolves striker Ade Akinbiyi. The News of the World claimed we were ready to make a shock bid but would have to pay L5m after the Molineux outfit turned down L4m bids from Leicester and Birmingham. Pleat countered: "This is not true."
However, there was some truth in the Sunday People's suggestion that Ruel Fox was due for talks with West Brom this week. The story said Baggies would pay L1m for the winger and have to pay a further L250,000 when Fox makes 15 appearances.
Pleat commented: "West Brom are one of several clubs who have made enquiries but the figures suggested are inaccurate."
