Pleat hits back

Posted on 31 August 2002  - 12:00

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Director of Football David Pleat has hit back at Bolton Wanderers, Chelsea and Real Madrid following unfounded criticism of Spurs from all three clubs.

Chelsea Chairman Ken Bates has claimed that we made an unacceptable bid for Eidur Gudjohnsen, Bolton manager Sam Allardyce has twice criticised us for supposedly unsettling Michael Ricketts and then making our interest public while Real are reported to have suggested that we actually reduced our final offer for Fernando Morientes.

“Our supporters are being misled by these criticisms and that is unfair on them and on this Club,” said David Pleat.

“Michael Ricketts was offered to us just before the deadline by agents acting on behalf of Bolton Wanderers. We were simply not interested in the deal suggested.

“We did make an enquiry for Gudjohnsen but never made an offer.

“With Morientes it is now quite clear that Madrid was using our interest in the player to obtain the best possible deal from their rivals Barcelona.

“We are always totally proper in our transfer dealings and resent any suggestions to the contrary.”
