The striker has signed an extension to his current contract and stories back home in Norway have suggested that he will now be the highest paid Norwegian footballer in the world.

Pleat chose not to go into the finer details of the deal but enthused: "We're delighted. Steffen Iversen is a young man, an international and is coming to terms with the Premiership. Touch wood he is over his injury problems. He is very much part of George Graham's plans and as such, we've been looking at a new contract for him.

"We have adjusted his contract and we are all very pleased. It gives us competition up front and a good standard of forward players is invaluable.

"We're very pleased, I'm sure he's very pleased and his agent is very pleased. Perhaps maybe he will have a rest and work for one of the other players in his stable."

Iversen, 23, joined us from Rosenborg in 1996. His early days at Spurs were blighted by injury but he has put those problems behind him and has finished top scorer for the last two seasons. Indeed, last season, he was the only player to score in the Premiership, FA Cup, Worthington Cup, UEFA Cup and European Championships.
