The annual Week of Peace (22nd - 28th September 2003) aims to raise community awareness of issues such as crime reduction and good citizenship, and to engage participation in tackling issues relating to community cohesion and safety.
Celebrations will run throughout the week, culminating in three main events: The Peace Awards (Wednesday 24th September 2003), The Peace Festival and Free Concert (Saturday 27th September 2003), and The Annual Peace Walk (Sunday 28th September 2003).
Tottenham Hotspur Football in the Community is taking the Peace Week message to some of Haringey's youngest resident. 250 children aged under 12 years old from 8 local schools have been invited to White Hart Lane for a football tournament running throughout Peace Week. This event will give children from the diverse Haringey community a valuable opportunity to come together in a safe, fun environment, to participate with and learn about each other.
Football in the Community are also arranging 5 a-side football fun at Alexandra Palace Great Hall during the Peace Festival, while Senior football club management will be supporting the esteemed Peace Awards through attendance at the Peace Week gala dinner. A signed shirt as been donated to this event and will be awarded to one of the extraordinary individuals honoured for the significant contribution they have made to the Haringey community.
Founder of Haringey Peace Alliance, Rev Nims Obunge said "The Peace Alliance is excited about the prospects of partnership with Tottenham Hotspur through its Football in the Community programme.
"Football plays an integral role in the lives of young people and we are pleased that this partnership will encourage young people, keeping them off the streets and engaging in sports activities.
"These sporting and other leisure even contributed to a recorded drop in crime during the first and second Peace Weeks in Haringey and I am convinced that as we work together to kick out racism in football and strengthen the aspirations and potentials of our youth we will certainly make a lasting difference in our community.
