Bringing the ball out of defence...

My first coach first put me in this position. I was playing in midfield but he said I had better skills as a defender and I could control the game more from the back, so it was the perfect position for me.

When you get the ball the other defenders push wide to open up the space and at the same time, give more options. It is important though not to think you have to make that great, great pass. First you have to keep the ball, so think about giving the player you have passed to an angle to get it back if you need to. Lots of movement, lots of angles, take your time and see what is ahead of you. Don't forget, you cannot take risks because it could lead to a goal against - just pass short if you have to. You could have a wonderful season but then one pass in one game, one mistake that leads to a goal and you will always be remembered for it.

Being able to use the ball from defence is something you can get better at in training and playing in the position but you have to have some ability to see the passes. It can be dangerous though. The style of football in Europe is different. Here, defenders are defenders and are not expected to do much more, just get the ball and pass it to the midfield. I always try to put some part of my game into it though. I like to pass the ball, I like to play with the ball from the back and the English style of football is perhaps changing with more teams looking to play like that.
