From Bern to the Bernabeu, via Bremen and the San Siro, Peter Crouch played a huge part in our Champions League story in 2010-11.

‘Crouchy’ scored the goal at Manchester City to get us into the Champions League play-off, then a hat-trick to make sure we lined-up in the group stages. He then scored in the opener at Werder Bremen, in the 3-1 win against Inter and of course the winner at AC Milan before seeing red in the quarter-finals against Real Madrid. A true rollercoaster ride.

With us back in the Champions League this season, the striker, now at Stoke, has been reliving those memories - and as we prepare for Matchday Four against Bayer Leverkusen at Wembley, we look back at MD4 in 2010.

Spurs 3-1 Inter
November 2, 2010

A fortnight earlier, we’d lost another night to remember at the San Siro, where our 10 men, led by hat-trick hero Gareth Bale, came from 4-0 down at half-time to narrowly lose 4-3.

Now it was time for the return at the Lane and a group of players who knew they could get at the Italians.

With an electric atmosphere under the lights at the Lane, it was all Spurs from the first minute. Remember, this was an Inter team including the likes of Eto’o, Zanetti, Lucio, Maicon, Samuel, Sneijder and Pandev, with Coutinho on the bench.

Bale was like a machine, he ran and ran and ran, time and again bursting past Maicon down the left, in back-to-back performances that would define his career. The BBC’s chief football writer Phil McNulty described Bale as ‘reducing Inter’s defence to rubble’.

Rafa van der Vaart fired us ahead on 18 minutes, Crouchy converted the second after one of Bale’s bursts on the hour, Samuel Eto’o responded for Inter on 80 minutes but it was our night as Bale took off again to present the clinching third goal on a plate for Roman Pavlyucheko a minute from time. It was a glory, glory night worthy of a place on the top table of our European history.

Below: Highlights from that memorable night against Inter Milan

'We outclassed Inter'

Crouchy: “For me, that was the one and because it was a complete, 90-minute performance where we totally outclassed Inter Milan. They had some top players and let’s not forget, they were the Champions League holders. I’ll always remember the atmosphere, it was just amazing. I played for Liverpool at Anfield in the Champions League and had some great nights there against the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid, but this night was right up there alongside those matches."

I thought ‘keep up with them’

Crouchy: “The atmosphere was electric and when the goals were going in it was incredible to part of it. It was funny, I was thinking playing with Bale and Lennon that as long as I could keep up with them, I’d get plenty of chances! I had to get myself in the box.

“Gareth Bale destroyed Maicon the whole game, it was unbelievable really and he did it again for my goal, slid in the perfect cross and it was an amazing moment to score against Inter Milan at White Hart Lane. Gareth was unplayable that night and it something special to be part of.”
