Chris Perry has admitted: "I can do better." Our central defender feels that fans did not see the best of him in his first season at the Lane despite his consistent displays in the heart of defence alongside Sol Campbell.
Last summer's big capture at L4m from Wimbledon insisted: "From a personal point of view my main aim was to establish myself in the side so to play in every game bar one was great. I was delighted with that.
"But I wasn't particularly happy with my form thoughout the season and I know I can play a lot better than I did. You know yourself when you are playing well and there were a couple of games that didn't go so well. I thought I was back to my best towards the end of the season and hopefully I can continue that when the season starts."
Perry is hoping we can repeat the start we made to last season when, despite the injury-forced absence of Sol Campbell, he was outstanding in defence and we marched to the top of the table by the end of August.
"We made a great start but failed to capitalise on it," he said. "It was difficult because we lost Sol early on and then lost a couple of important players through injuries. That was bound to affect us.
"Hopefully this time around we'll have those players back, have more strength in depth and, if we get off to a good start again, we can capitalise on it."
