Chris Perry completed a successful return from injury and saved the day as the reserves fought out a goalless draw at St Albans on Tuesday night.

Perry was in action for the first time since damaging a calf muscle at Manchester City on February 10 and lasted 84 minutes before being replaced by Ian Hillier.

And he was there when it mattered with eight minutes left - somehow managing to reach and slide to safety Kevin Lisbie's goalbound flick over Ian Walker.

Matthew Etherington's direct approach and willingness to take his full-back on provided the highlight of a scrappy first half.

Few chances were created as both teams struggled to maintain possession - no surprise with the likes of Davies, Jackson, Toner and Premiership regulars Newton, Kinsella and Robinson snapping away in midfield.

Charlton came closest to breaking the deadlock in the 18th minute when Newton's burst took him to the byline, his cross was directed towards Lisbie but the striker couldn't keep his header on target under pressure from Jackson.

Willem Korsten had our first half-chance at the start of the second half. Chris Perry curled in a free-kick, Charlton keeper Tony Caig failed to punch clear but Korsten, loitering with intent on the edge of the box, lofted his effort wide.

Ian Walker had to spring into action for the first time almost immediately as Lisbie latched onto a long ball but the goalkeeper was there to save at his feet. McCafferty then volleyed wide from a corner.

As the action livened up, Korsten headed Ferguson's fine cross just wide after a fine move involving Iversen and Jackson and Perry's 'goal' from a corner was ruled out for a foul on Caig.

Perry's rescue act came in the 82nd minute with a last-ditch goal line clearance after Lisbie flicked the ball over Walker and in injury time Gardner headed wide from Korsten's inswinging corner.
