The 20-year-olds have impressed in our last two Premiership victories against Liverpool and Leicester City and now face the prospect, if selected, of facing Manchester United at Old Trafford.
Perry, who has seen Thelwell’s progress at particularly close quarters after partnering him in the centre of defence, commented: “Alton has done really well in his first two games.
“It’s obviously difficult when you first come into the side and there was a bit criticism flying about but both Alton and Ledley have come in, done very well and they’ve been like a breath of fresh air.
“Against Liverpool and Owen and Fowler Alton was fantastic and again on Saturday against Leicester he did everything that was required of him. It would be good for him to get a run in the side, keep learning, keep improving and hopefully become one of the top defenders in the league.
“We all knew that they were capable of coming into the side but it was just a matter of when the manager was going to put them in.
“A few injuries forced his hand and they’ve come in and done well. It gives the crowd a lift when they can see that the club is bringing through it’s own players.”
Skipper Campbell, back against Foxes after a 10-week injury absence, followed the same path through the ranks as Thelwell and King.
He added: “These young lads have been here for a long time. They’ve been training and when you look at it sometimes you get your opportunity through injuries, they’ve come in and done well.
“They’ve taken the bull by the horns and gone for it and it’s good to see. You get your chance and have to take it. These lads have taken it and moved on and it’s great to see.”
