Pedro Mendes is well aware of the need to add a little bite to his natural passing game as he adapts to the blood and thunder of English football.
A Champions League winner with FC Porto last season, few doubted Pedro's quality on the ball on his arrival from Portugal.
And if there were any doubts about him 'getting stuck in', those doubts have been allayed in pre-season.
"I have to tackle," stated the midfielder. "I have to be more aggressive and change my defensive game a little.
"It will be difficult for me otherwise because all the other players are very strong so I have to do it and get used to that part of my game.
"It's a little different. The games are faster and more aggressive but I've got used to that in pre-season. In that respect, these friendly games are very important for me.
"In Portugal there are quicker games as well, not all of them, but it's no surprise. I knew what was waiting here when I came, it's up to me to get used to it."
Our friendly against Rangers at Ibrox is perhaps the closest Pedro has got to what he will face week in, week out in the Premiership.
"Yes, Rangers was a good game for me," he considered. "They were stronger than the teams we had played, the result was not that good but it was good preparation."
