Harry Redknapp insists pre-season is all about peaking for the big kick-off in August.
The lads played out a goalless draw against MLS side and club partners San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday, the first of three friendlies in America.
Halfway through their MLS campaign, the Earthquakes provided a real test in the California sun with temperatures hitting 85 degrees at the Buck Shaw Stadium.
The squad will continue to train in San Jose today (Monday, July 19) before flying across the country to New York for the Barclays New York Challenge and matches against the New York Red Bulls on Thursday and Sporting Lisbon on Sunday.
"This is the start of a new season for us," said Harry. "We have two games to come in New York now and then we go back home and play Villarreal, Benfica and then Fiorentina, so we have five games before the season starts.
"It is all about peaking for the start of the season, that is what we are aiming to do, that is what it is about.
"It is not about winning pre-season games and losing in the regular season during league games."
