The Brazilian midfielder struck just minutes after the Black Cats had taken the lead against the run of play at the Stadium of Light.
Adam Johnson fired the home side ahead on 37 minutes but Paulinho was there six minutes later to turn home Nacer Chadli’s knock down from Kyle Walker’s free-kick.
Mousa Dembele’s cross was sliced into his own net for 2-1 four minutes into the second half and the only mystery was how it stayed 2-1 as Jermain Defoe hit the post twice and Paulinho was one of a number of players to go close. We ended the game with a shot count of 22-11 in our favour.
Paulinho’s poacher’s strike made it four away goals in all competitions – all wins.
“It was an important goal but the most important thing was that we got the three points,” he said.
“We played so well. We showed real concentration after we conceded the first goal and we were ready to score soon after.
“The Premier League is difficult and when you lose the first goal, you have to play well. We did that. We passed the ball well, kept possession and that was key. Then we scored the two goals. It was important to win this game.”
