We take our first steps in this season’s competition when we head to Burnley for a third round tie on Monday evening, just over a fortnight after facing the Clarets in the Premier League.
We secured a 2-1 home victory on that occasion – and midfielder Paulinho expects a similarly tough examination at Turf Moor this time around.
“We know it will be a difficult game but we also know that if we play like we did on New Year’s Day against Chelsea then it will be possible to win,” said the 26-year-old.
“We have to be focused and ready for whatever Burnley throw at us.
“It will be a hard game because when we played them in the league they gave us a difficult match.
“Burnley are a good side so we’ll have to go there, focus and enjoy the game like we did against Chelsea.
“We can go on a run in the FA Cup – we have to help each other out on the pitch and if we do that then we can go a long way in every cup competition.”
A second half substitute for Andros Townsend in our 5-3 triumph against Chelsea on Thursday, Paulinho was understandably thrilled to have played his part in such a memorable victory – and to have secured some bragging rights over some of his fellow countrymen!
“It was good for me to help the team from the bench and it was important to get a good 30 minutes under my belt,” he added.
“I’m happy, not just to get on the pitch but for the team to win.
“I know some of their Brazilian players – Ramires, Willian and Oscar – quite well. They are good guys and I speak to them regularly but when we’re on the pitch we’re against each other and it was a good one for me this time to get the better of them!
“We had a great win against a top team, but the most important thing is the three points and that everyone played well. We have to keep going now and focus again for our FA Cup game before we go back to the Premier League against Crystal Palace next weekend.”
