Martin Jol revealed that Pascal Chimbonda played against the pain of a knee injury in Sunday's 2-1 win against Chelsea at the Lane.

Pascal needed lengthy treatment early in the first half following a heavy challenge from Frank Lampard but stuck at it and was outstanding in the second half.

Martin said: "Chimbonda injured his medial ligament but I had no defenders so he said 'okay', played on and was one of the best players. That was evidence of our spirit and character.

"We played on Thursday and believe me, it's not easy when a top side like Chelsea has two days extra rest. We had some tired legs out there and normally you need a cushion of two goals, we didn't have that but the lads dug in and fought for their lives. I'm a happy man."
