Our Under-18s impressed in the first half but were eventually overrun in a 3-1 defeat at Manchester United in the Premier Academy League on Saturday.

It was a classic 'game of two halves' at United's Carrington training ground as we led 1-0 at half-time thanks to Josh Onomah's 16th-minute strike.

However, goals from Kenji Gorre (50 minutes) and a quickfire double from James Wilson (72, 75) completed United's comeback in the second half. Laste Dombaxe struck the woodwork late on.

Zodel Brown and Kane Vincent-Young made their first starts at Under-18 level and young midfielder Onomah impressed again in central midfield.

"I thought we were excellent in the first half," reported coach Alex Inglethorpe.

"I was delighted for Zodel and Kane, who made their full debuts at Under-18 level and the youngsters did really well.

"The story of the game is that we were really impressive in the first half but ran out of steam a little in the second half.

"We took the lead after a well-worked move that ended with Josh Onomah breaking forward and capitalising after Darren McQueen had got into the box.

"Josh is only 15 and playing in the heart of midfield, a real challenge for him in Under-18s football, but at times he looked the best player on the pitch again.

"We knew they would come at us in the second half and in true United style, they didn't disappoint. In the end, they just had too much for us going forward in the second half.

"That said, we've got to improve on our mental qualities because if they want to play in the Premier League, the players will have to learn how to cope with momentum and how to stay in games, but there is plenty of time for that yet.

"We're playing younger players and they always take time to settle down and find out how to win. Having said that, we're playing some lovely football and after Christmas, I expect us to push on."
