The Saints were happy to soak up pressure in the first half and countered impressively to go 2-0 up through Ryan Seager and Jack Flannigan.
Alex Inglethorpe's team responded well in the second half. Kenneth McEvoy reduced arrears in the 59th minute before Darren McQueen equalised six minutes later.
The lads created a number of chances to take maximum points after that but it wasn't to be, the closest when Shaq Coulthirst's effort was cleared off the line.
Alex reported: "We had lots of possession in the first half but didn't really create that many chances because they had a really strong block that we couldn't get through.
"The consequence of that was any misplaced pass or attack that didn't go our way, we were countered on, and I didn't think we defended the counter-attacks well. We certainly made it easier for them by our mistakes.
"We deservedly got the two goals back in the second half and you could argue that we deserved the win in the end.
"Our first goal came from a good run forward by centre-half Connor Ogilvie, who kept going and kept going, found himself on the left of the penalty and crossed for Kenny McEvoy to touch in at the far post.
"The second goal was a fantastic pass from Josh Onomah to pick out Kenny down the right and he slid the ball across for Darren McQueen to tap home."
