OUT TO WIN

Juande Ramos and Gus Poyet have stressed that we're aiming for victory against Anderlecht in the UEFA Cup tonight.

We go into our fourth and final group match on six points knowing that a point will guarantee our place in the last 32. Six points might well prove enough and has done historically since the competition introduced group stages.

But there is no questioning the intent of the management team here in Brussels.

“The intention is always to win,” insisted Head Coach Juande at Wednesday’s press conference at the Constant Vanden Stock Stadium.

“Anderlecht are a good team so we will have to work hard and the teams in this group all have their qualities.”

Asked if the UEFA Cup was more important than the league, Juande added: “All games are important to us. For me, the most important game is the next game, so the most important game is Anderlecht and then Manchester City in the Premier League.”

“The mentality and approach is to go there and win it,” added first team coach Gus. “We came into the competition with no points after (the defeat against) Getafe, we’ve put it right with two victories and it’s now time to finish it off in the right way, especially as we are not playing in the final round of fixtures in the group.

“A point should be enough to get us through, but a win means we could top the group and that’s important. Then we can see who is coming next.

“Anderlecht feel comfortable at home. They play to their strengths - good players, Frutos up front is dangerous in the air and inside the box. They are strong and lot of goals are from set-pieces, so that means we have to concentrate.

“Individually, in terms of quality, I think we are better but this isn’t one-on-one, it’s not tennis and we have to play as a team and be better than them as a team.”
