Following their thrilling beating at the Reebok Stadium on Boxing Day, Newcastle now face the prospect of hosting Spurs - a team with high hopes of at least a place in the UEFA Cup at the end of the season if not the Champions League.

The Londoners had a scare of their own on Thursday but fought back to force a 2-2 draw with Charlton. Glenn Hoddle was displeased with the referee following Christian Ziege's dismissal in the closing stages of the match: "If refs took five or 10 seconds to look at things again, like they do in rugby, they'd make the right decision more often than the wrong one." Spurs are now rapidly catching up with the top six most indisciplined sides in the division, with Christian Ziege facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines following his second consecutive late red card.

Newcastle are angelic in comparison, as the second cleanest side in the Premiership behind Liverpool. Not that this stops Sir Bob from having a pop at the officials himself - his vitriol was directed at Uriah Rennie, who chose to book Tresor Lomana Lua-Lua for diving on Thursday and then Alan Shearer for protesting on behalf of his team-mate.

The latter now misses the trip to West Ham in the new year thanks to the accumulation of five cautions, but the former England skipper will be ready and willing to put one or two past Kasey Keller in the Tottenham goal this weekend. Shearer has scored 10 times against the north London side in the Premiership, making them his joint-seventh favourite club to play against, out of the 34 teams that have been in the top flight since 1992.

At the other end of the park one-time international partner of Shearer, Teddy Sheringham will be looking to outfox Shay Given, and score his fifth Premiership goal against the Magpies. Each of the previous four strikes came while at Spurs rather than Nottingham Forest or Manchester United, but they will be remembered only by those with long memories - he has had no joy against Newcastle since a hat-trick back in 1994.
