*Opta Player of the Month

Posted on 11 March 2005  - 12:00

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Opta Player of the Month: Andy Reid

Despite having played just two games since his winter transfer to Tottenham from Nottingham Forest, Andy Reid did enough to earn the accolade of Opta Player of the Month for February. Spurs only played three Premiership games in the month but their two wins came with the crafty Irishman in the starting eleven.

Indeed, Reid helped Spurs end their poor run of form in London derbies. The Lilywhites had gone 12 games at home without a derby win but with their new winger in place, Fulham were despatched with vigour.

Reid’s chief asset is his ability to whip in crosses and he managed 30 in just 180 minutes of play in February, with 23% of them finding a white shirt. It was such a pass in the game with Portsmouth that enabled fellow Irishman Robbie Keane to slot home Tottenham’s third goal of the day.

Second best player in February was another midfielder, but a different sort of player. Michael Brown is a midfield dynamo, a man with energy in his boots and a seething need to enter the ferocious morass of the centre circle.

Brown was his usual self in February, and even ended with an assist to his name too. He pounded into 17 tackles, winning 71% of them and completed 84% of his passes. Brown has been highly valued by all three of Tottenham’s managers in recent months and he is yet to let down his side.

Third place goes to yet another midfielder, and this time it’s Michael Carrick. The elegant schemer has formed a dynamic partnership with Brown. He made a respectable total of 160 passes and 15 tackles in the month.

One aspect of his play he could improve on is his shooting as he did not manage a single attempt at goal in February. That said, as long as he is probing and filling the midfield with guile, manager Martin Jol will surely be delighted.
