Opta Player of the month — January, 2004
Tottenham’s Irish hitman Robbie Keane enjoyed a prolific month in front of goal in January and as a result is the Opta Index player of the month for Tottenham for the second month running.
Keane has managed to put his injury problems from early in the season fully behind him now and has recaptured his best form. He hit the back of the net in every Premiership game during the month. That moved him on to nine in total for the season and he has overtaken Freddie Kanoute as Tottenham’s leading scorer in the league.
Keane’s goals against Birmingham, Leeds, Liverpool and Fulham meant he was the Premiership’s leading scorer during the month, scoring with a third of all the shots he attempted.
Behind Robbie Keane in January’s rankings was another Irishman who has forced his way back from injury. Gary Doherty had started just three games this season before January, but was an ever present for Spurs during the past month. Not only did he grab the crucial equaliser in the Cup at Manchester City but he made more tackles and more clearances than any other Tottenham player.
The third highest ranked player was ‘keeper Kasey Keller — the only ever present this season and the player of the month for both October and November.
