OPTA INDEX: April Player of the Month — Robbie Keane
Two points out of a possible 15 for Tottenham Hotspur during April meant that Spurs failed to win in a calendar month for the first time since September. However, Tottenham fans can take great satisfaction from the spirit shown by their team during the second half fight back in the North London derby.
Tottenham scored four goals in five games last month, all of which came during the second half. The last of these was perhaps the most significant and Spurs will be looking to build on their last gasp draw against Arsenal.
Having won the penalty, Robbie Keane showed great composure to score his first goal in nine games. Keane has scored all four penalties that he has taken in the Premiership and has attempted more shots than any of his team mates this season (57). Irish international Keane follows the age old rule for strikers that if you don’t hit the target then you can’t score. Only Liverpool’s Michael Owen (61% of shots on target) is more likely to hit the target in the Premiership than Keane (60%).
Spurs’ first game in April coincided with the return of Jamie Redknapp to the starting 11. The 30-year old hit seven shots throughout April and scored his first goal of the season against Arsenal. Redknapp’s experience could be vital to the young Tottenham side in forthcoming matches and his high passing accuracy of 89% in his own half demonstrates that he is leading by example.
In fact, despite Tottenham hitting more shots (15) from outside the penalty area than any other Premiership team, the only goal to come from distance was Redknapp’s. It was just the third goal to beat Arsenal stopper Jens Lehmann from outside the area in open play this season, and the first since Bolton’s Henrik Pedersen in December.
Completing the top three is recent signing, Michael Brown. The ex-Manchester City and Sheffield United midfielder led Spurs in passing (240) and tackles (18) during April, as well as setting up Redknapp’s goal against Arsenal. Brown has started 14 consecutive games since arriving from the Blades and will be hoping to form a solid midfield partnership with Jamie Redknapp in time for Spurs’ 2004-05 Premiership campaign.
