Opta Index Player of the Month

Posted on 6 March 2003  - 12:00

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Darren Anderton has been named Opta Index's Spurs Player of the Month for February.

Here are Opta's findings...

Darren Anderton is Opta’s Tottenham Player of the Month following some fine February displays.

The club’s longest-serving player has been in great form in recent matches and beat off competition from Teddy Sheringham and Kasey Keller to earn the accolade.

Anderton started the month in the London derby at Chelsea and helped set up Spurs’ first goal at Stamford Bridge for six years when he drove the ball across the face of the six-yard box for Sheringham to slide in and score. The midfielder played a key part in helping Spurs take a point at what is a notoriously unrewarding hunting ground for Glenn Hoddle’s men. His tally of nine crosses was more than any other Spurs player and he posed more than a few problems for of the Blues defence in other areas.

The former England international’s assist for Sheringham at Chelsea was one of four he provided in February. The other three came in the 4-1 triumph against Sunderland on the eighth of the month.

It was the first time in a game this season that a player completed a hat-trick of assists and was a big factor in helping him to win the man-of the-match award. And he was only denied his first goal of the season in that match by a fine save from Sunderland goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen on 53 minutes. But Anderton soon got revenge when he provided that centre for Sheringham to head home his 300th goal at club level.

The month ended on a sour note for Anderton when he was sent off against Fulham, his first red card in his 13-year career with both Spurs and Portsmouth.

Despite committing just two fouls in the match, referee Graham Barber did not hesitate to send the midfielder off, who prior to that moment was again one of Spurs’ liveliest performers.

Opta’s announcement may not soften the blow for Anderton as he contemplates his forthcoming suspension, but is a fitting reward for the player’s February displays.
