Opta Player of the Month — September
With only one goal conceded in the Premiership in September, it comes as no surprise that Paul Robinson wins the Spurs Opta Player of the Month award.
The former Leeds United goalkeeper has been in excellent form this month, helping Spurs to keep up their impressive start under Jacques Santini. In September, Robinson only conceded one goal and it took a penalty kick from the boot of Ruud van Nistelrooy to spoil his chances of a complete shut-out for the month.
That penalty strike gave United a narrow 1-0 victory and ended Spurs unbeaten start to the season, but Robinson’s good form bodes well for the rest of the campaign.
The 24-year-old saved nine shots in all in September, with seven of those saves made from close-range efforts. The Beverley-born shot-stopper has also been unflappable when dealing with high-balls, punching four balls and catching two, with not a drop or a spill to his name.
Robinson’s form will not have gone unnoticed by Sven-Goran Eriksson, and with current England No. 1 David James still seemingly prone to making costly mistakes, this may well be the season that Tottenham’s No. 1 finally cements his place in the national team.
Second to Robinson is Noe Pamarot, a player who it is fair to say came to White Hart Lane with very few fans knowing little about him at all.
However, the former Nice defender has instantly increased his profile with a number of impressive defensive displays.
The 25 year-old has been a major physical force for Spurs this month, winning 10 tackles, more than any other Spurs player, getting in five blocks, again a high for the club and stopping four crosses from penetrating the danger area, another tally not bettered by any other Spurs player.
Third in the ranking is Robbie Keane. The young Irishman, despite falling victim to Tottenham’s current goal-drought, has managed six attempts on goal, the second best total for a Spurs player.
Keane, who found himself playing wide on the left against Manchester United, has proved to be a healthy source of goal chances, setting up team-mates on four occasions. The former Inter Milan man has also knocked in 12 crosses, a total only bettered by Erik Edman.
Always eager to bamboozle defenders, Keane has also set off on 10 dribbles, the second highest number this month at Spurs.
