Alex McLeish was left to reflect on a 'cruel game' after Aaron Lennon's late heroics secured a 2-1 win at the Lane on Saturday.

Few could question that we had the better of it but the Blues hit back immediately after Peter Crouch had finally headed us into the lead in the 72nd minute.

Lee Bowyer found the net for the visitors and Gary O'Connor missed a golden chance soon after before Lennon's winner in injury time.

"It was devastating to lose so late," said the Birmingham boss. "But life goes on. We deserved something for our second-half performance.

"We could have won the game at the end after we equalised and I'm disappointed not to have taken three points.

"We had lots of players out with injuries and we gave a great account of ourselves. I always like to see plenty of resilience and character and we had a real winning mentality which was great to see."
