Rafa Benitez underlined the importance of Wednesday night's win for his Liverpool side.
Dirk Kuyt did the damage as it ended 2-0 at Anfield with the key opening goal after six minutes before wrapping up the points from the penalty spot in injury time.
In-between, Pepe Reina saved well from Luka Modric and Jermaine Jenas while Jermain Defoe had an equalising 'goal' disallowed, but the home side created numerous chances towards the end of the match as we pushed forward with the score at 1-0.
"It was important for everyone here because we had to reduce the gap and stay in the race," said the Reds' boss.
"I am really pleased with the attitude of the players, we showed character.
"It was important for us to score early. We were playing well but in the first half we were not in control, although we had the better chances.
"The second half was more clear. After the first goal they had to go forward and left spaces, which was good for us.
"Everyone knows Liverpool are a good team and it was just a question of time to start winning games and showing our quality."
